Bernhard A. Amstutz, 86, son of the late Max Amstutz and Hedwig Platt and a long time Cranford NJ resident, died Monday November 23, 2020 at Chestnut Knoll Memory Care in Boyertown, Pennsylvania.
Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, Bernhard was trained as a business machine repair technician and worked in Switzerland, Spain and South Africa before immigrating to the United States in 1960. He spent his life in the United States where he embarked on a successful career, ultimately as a small business owner. In 1962, he married Beatrice P. Amstutz and moved to Cranford, New Jersey, where they raised their three children. In 1978, he started the U.S. distributorship of a multinational energy measurement company, Ista Energy Systems Corporation (Ista). In 1997, Bernhard purchased the U.S. arm of Ista and re-named the company to Istec Corporation; he successfully ran the company with his wife, Beatrice, until it was sold, on his retirement in 2001.
Bernhard was an outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman, who enjoyed wildlife and nature. He also had a passion for jazz music and frequented the New Orleans Jazz Festival. He also enjoyed skiing and other outdoor pursuits, spending time at his country house in the Poconos with his family, including his daughter, sons and grandchildren.
Bernhard is pre-deceased by his wife (2007) and survived by his brother Max Amstutz, of Winterthur, Switzerland. He is also survived by his daughter Michele Lesoine (grandchildren Abigail and Maxwell), and sons Peter (grandchildren Nicole, Elizabeth and Kimberly) and Andrew (grandchildren Natalie and Caroline). In lieu of flowers or other signs of appreciation, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy (www.support.nature.org) or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (www.alzfdn.org) in Bernhard’s name.
