Carl C. Manwiller, 86, of Gilbertsville, passed away following an illness on January 18, 2011, at the Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown. He was the widower of the late Margaret B. (Burder) Manwiller who passed away on April 10, 2010. They shared 62 years of marriage, and were married on June 21, 1947, in Pottstown. He was born in Boyertown on April 11, 1924, and was a son of the late Florence (Baus) Manwiller, and the late Charles S. Manwiller.
He was a 1942 graduate of Boyertown High School, and was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II, who served in the Amphibian Forces aboard LST 850, LST 52, and LCI(S) 53. Carl was employed by Ritter’s Foods of Boyertown for 39 years, during which he managed Ritter’s Meat Stand at Zern’s Farmers Market for 35 years before his retirement in 1986, and he enjoyed his time as a professional meat cutter, and serving the public. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion Post # 471, and he was a life member of the Friendship Hook & Ladder Fire Company of Boyertown. Carl was also a member of the Gilbertsville Fire Company where he served on the house committee for 20 years, 18 of which he was the treasurer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and taking long car rides with his wife. Carl was an avid reader and historian, and he would openly share stories of his time in the Navy during World War II. He loved model railroading, and for many years created displays that would change and expand each year. Carl was a great fan of all sports, especially baseball. His grateful, cheerful, and independent spirit touched the lives of so many.
Carl is survived by his daughters; Linda L. Manwiller, of Boyertown, and Judy M. Epler, wife of Keith, of Boyertown, his grandson; Alex R. Epler, of Boyertown, and his sister; Lena Royer Hacker, of Boyertown.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 10:30 AM, with Pastor John Pearson officiating, at Catagnus Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 1020 E. Philadelphia Avenue, Gilbertsville, Pa., 19525, and to his Visitation on Saturday morning from 9:30-10:15 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown. Memorial contributions in his name can be made to the Boyertown Area Multi-Service, 301 W.
