Daniel Robert Schanley, 80, husband of the late Darlene J. Schanley who died July 22, 2009, and married to for 52 years, passed away on Tuesday after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Woodchoppertown and a lifelong resident of Boyertown, he was the son of the late Claude and Hannah (MacIlvee) Schanley.

Dan had many jobs though the years. The early years included truck driving and bartending, until he settled into a career with DANA in Reading where he started out as a crane operator and eventually retired as a union rep in August of 1992 after 29 years of service. He was a proud US Army Korean War veteran. Dan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Douglassville, a lifetime member of the VFW, SOAR of the United Steelworkers, the Pike Twp. Sportsman’s Association, and the American Legion, Charles B. Yerger Post. His favorite hobby was to follow his grandchildren around to all of their sporting and musical events. He didn’t miss a single softball game and few basketball games during his granddaughter, Adrienne’s, playing days at Gettysburg College. He loved taking his boat out near the Indian River Inlet to fish with his grandsons, Matt and Brett. He coached a Daniel Boone Youth Softball team for 8 years, and the team won the Championship in his final season in 1998. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He is survived by his daughter Bonnie, wife of Timothy Simmons of Douglassville; three adoring grandchildren, Adrienne Simmons of Douglassville, Matthew Simmons of Alexandria, VA, and Brett Simmons of Douglassville (at home); brothers Claude Schanley, husband of Fern, of Boyertown, and Carl Schanley, husband of Diane, of Boyertown; sisters Dorothy Miller of Boyertown, Florence Styer, wife of Elmer, of Frederick, and Miriam Werstler, wife of Earl, of Boyertown; 10 nieces and 4 nephews.  Along with his wife and parents, he is predeceased by sisters Ida Eberhart and Anna Weand.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, 11:00AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 548 Old Swede Road, Douglassville with Rev. Gregory W. Frey officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown. Visitation will be on Friday from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan’s name to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 548 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, PA 19518.
