John Denis Katch, Jr., 67, of Pottstown, passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the Reading Hospital. He was the son of the late John Sr. and Alice (Hawkins) Katch. John was a 1974 graduate of Pottsgrove High School where he played football and met his wife of 42 years, Debbie LaRue (Varady) Katch, before going on to attend Wesley College (Dover, DE).
Throughout his life John was an avid Philadelphia sports fan. His love of football began while serving as a ball boy for the Pottstown Firebirds, most notably during their 1969 and 1970 Championship seasons. He went on to become a beloved football coach at many area schools and devoted much of his time to supporting local athletic programs. In addition, he coached numerous teams and held various board positions for the Pottstown Little League, including President. Watching the Eagles win Super Bowl LII and the Phillies, Sixers, Flyers, and Villanova Wildcats win their championships were some of his fondest memories.
John was a member of the Pottstown Elks Lodge. He enjoyed traveling, going on cruises, celebrating his sons’ academic and athletic achievements, and spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Surviving along with his wife are his two sons and their families: John A. Katch, his fiancée Tara Carbo, and children Christian, Cora, Charleigh, and Mario. Jarrod A. Katch, his wife Eryn (O’Shaughnessy) Katch, and their son (expected in August). John is also survived by his sister Jan D. St. Germain (Katch); his beloved Bichon, Nova; his in-laws, Alex and LaRue (Hurter) Varady; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of life will be held privately at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the next time you watch a Philly sports game, raise a glass in John’s memory, knowing he’s cheering right along with you.
