Gloria Dolores (Zern) Levengood, 79, of Gilbertsville, died on December 30, 2009, at the Stapeley Home in Philadelphia, PA, after a period of declining health. 

Born on October 21, 1930, Mrs. Levengood was a lifelong resident of the Boyertown/Gilbertsville area.  Daughter of Clarence and Florence (Shaner) Zern, she graduated from Boyertown High School and earned her teaching credentials from Cedar Crest College.  She was united in marriage with William Levengood on June 28, 1952, at the Sassamansville Reformed Church.  He preceded her in death in 2008.

Mrs. Levengood began her more than 30-year teaching career as a high school business teacher, then became an elementary school teacher, and after completing graduate work at Kutztown University, served as a children’s librarian. 

A life-long member of Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ in Bechtelsville, Mrs. Levengood was active in church programs as a teacher and church musician, and in later years enjoyed senior activities with fellow church members, including the Sunday “brunch bunch.” 

An avid traveler, Mrs. Levengood visited many sites associated with children’s literature in the US, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In addition, she and her husband enjoyed spending time at their cabin in Tioga County and camping across the US and Canada.  She enjoyed reading, music, bird watching, exploring local culinary and cultural offerings, collecting children’s antique furniture, and visits with friends and family.

Surviving are her sister Eleanor (Mark) Steiner of Wooster, OH, nephew Neil (Shirley) Levengood, nieces Julie (Marta Rose) and Amy (Darlene Pido) Steiner, great niece Tammy (Randy) Cleaver, great-great nieces Lillian and Emily Jones, great-niece Beatrix and great-nephew Micah Steine-Rose, and a host of cousins and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, 10:30AM at Shepherd of the Hills Church, 527 Hoffmansville Road, Bechtelsville, with Rev John Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends may call on Tuesday from 9:30AM to 10:30AM at the church.
