Hilda E. (Stengel) Smith, 96, wife of the late George H. Smith Jr., of Pottstown, passed away on Saturday at Manatawny Manor in Pottstown.
Born in Bally, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Mary (Eck) Stengel.
Surviving is her long time companion of 31 years Richard N. Deets; sons George A. “Buddy” Smith, husband of Georganne, of Alburtis and Leonard H. “Lenny” Smith, husband of Carol, of Garnet Valley; grandchildren Tara Swartz, wife of William, of Geigertown and Gregg Smith, husband of Gloria, of Upper Pottsgrove Twp.; and great grandchildren Morgan, Alec and Rachel Swartz and Jared and Aiden Smith. Along with her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers Neuman, Theodore and Harvey Stengel.
Hilda was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Stowe and a member of the Freeland Chapter No.323 Order of the Eastern Star in Collegeville for 50 plus years. She worked as a sale consultant for 10 years at the former New York Store in Pottstown and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 20 years. Hilda also loved to cook. Hilda enjoyed nothing more than watching her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events, theatrical plays and dance recitals. Her greatest love next to her family was playing bingo. She was an avid ballroom dancer and traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. Hilda loved the Lord and served him faithfully throughout her life.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 10:00AM at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 214 N. Hanover Street. Burial will follow in Falkner Swamp Church Cemetery, Gilbertsville. Family and friends may call on Thursday, from 9:00AM to 10:00AM at the church.
