Peter Joseph Dever, Sr., 78, of Pottstown, passed away Monday February 17, 2020 at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.
Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late James C. and Mary Frances (Gallagher) Dever.
Peter was a graduate of Roman Catholic High School, class of 1959. He started college at Saint Joseph’s University and left early to become a Philadelphia Firefighter. After his service as a firefighter, he decided to change his profession to something that he thoroughly enjoyed. Peter became a greatly respected PGA Golf Professional. He worked briefly at Plymouth Country Club then spent over 40 years at Brookside Country Club, in Pottstown. Based upon his performance as Brookside’s Golf Professional, he received Pro Emeritus status. Besides these achievements, he was also mentor and champion to several individuals, assisting their golf career successes.
After retirement, he enjoyed many activities, such as playing in many local weekly golf leagues with friends, enjoying time with his family, spending time with his friends, walking his canine companion through the North End and even worked part-time with his son, Matthew at Phoenixville Country Club. Peter was a member of the Pottstown Elks BPOE #814, Friendship Hook & Ladder Fire Co., Holy Trinity Club, and was a member of the PGA for over 50 years.
Peter (aka “The Popper”) was an extremely loving, proud and affectionate father and grandfather. Peter is survived by his four children Peter Joseph Dever, Jr., Cara Dever Baumeister (wife of Harry), Matthew Thomas Dever (husband of Shannon), and Megan Patricia Dever; longtime partner, Judy Piersol and his four grandchildren; Quinn, Owen, Cameron, and Conner; including his siblings, James C. Dever, John Dever, Anne Bancroft and Mary Frances (Franny) Dever.
Peter’s family will be scheduling and hosting a Celebration of Life, in Peter’s memory for both Family and Friends. Prior to the celebratory event, details will be provided for any possible memorial contributions.
