Rev. William Morris Longstreth, 88, of Pottstown, husband of Barbara H. (Heylmun) Longstreth, passed away on Friday June 18 at Pottstown Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia and raised in Gladwyne, he was the son of the late William C. and Laura L. (Nelson) Longstreth.
Morris was an English professor at Montgomery County Community College and an associate pastor at Christ Episcopal Church in Pottstown for many years. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pottstown. Morris attended Episcopal Academy and went on to receive his BA in English from Haverford College. He then went on to receive his Masters in English from Villanova and his Masters in Divinity from Philadelphia Divinity School. Morris was a voracious reader and loved doing volunteer work.
Morris was a kind, gentle soul whose loving spirit made a big difference in the many lives he touched throughout his life. His volunteer work took him to many places in the surrounding area. He provided meals to homebound seniors for over 20 years through Meals on Wheels, visited with residents and held church services at both Manatawny Manor and Manor Care, was a Compeer volunteer with his friend George who lived in Norristown, taught GED courses at Graterford prison, and was a Big Brother in his younger years to a group of teenage boys from Philadelphia.
Morris positively influenced the lives of many students at Montgomery County Community College, as he was both a brilliant teacher and a supportive mentor.
Among many other things, Morris will be remembered for his kind spirit and devotion to others.
Surviving with his wife of 61 years is son Paul Longstreth; daughters Elisabeth Lee, wife of Keyai, and Lydia Longstreth; and 5 grandchildren. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Thomas Longstreth.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 30, 11:00AM at First Presbyterian Church, 750 N. Evans Street, Pottstown with a private burial in the church peace garden. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30AM to 10:45AM at the church.
