Joseph Daniel Smola, 75, husband of Melanie A. (Lewis) Smola, passed away peacefully at his home after a brave battle with cancer on Friday, October 28, 2022.
Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Joseph and Helen (Vasko) Smola.
Joseph was a beloved husband and father. He was a man of integrity, had a great sense of humor, an impish smile and keen intellect. He was a nature lover, avid sportsman and gun enthusiast, as well as a World War II history buff. He was a graduate of Drexel University and held a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. Joseph worked as an engineer and supervisor in the local steel industry. He was also an inventor and was granted a patent for a micrometer device designed for use in the steel industry. Joseph was a longtime member of St. Aloysius Parish in Pottstown. He was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and the Ukrainian people’s courageous fight to maintain their sovereignty.
Surviving along with his wife Melanie of 51 years, is his daughter Melissa George, wife of Joe; and his beloved cat Oscar.
A private graveside service was held on Wednesday, November 2, 2022, with the Rev. Randall Grossman officiating. A memorial/celebration of life is planned for the spring. Family and friends will be notified with details.
