Richard Duer Nyman was called home by his Lord and Savior Saturday January 28, 2023 at the age of 93. He was born in Gilbertsville to the late C. Duer & Sarah (Johnson) Nyman. He is survived by his beloved wife Jeannette E. (Hoppes) Nyman of 71 years, Rodney A. Nyman, Peggy C. Wash, Dennis G. Nyman, partner of Lisa Miller Nellius, Trudy L. Durante, wife of David Durante and Sharon K. Stofflet, wife if Richard Stofflet, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, whom he loved all very dearly. He is also survived by a sister Mary (Tutty) Kolarz, wife of Frank (Butch), and David Nyman, husband of June. He was predeceased by his brother Robert "Buckskin" Nyman.
Richard was the epitome of a father. His life was his wife, his family and his work. Richard went by many nick names, Bud, Olly, Oliver, but mostly known as Bud or Uncle Bud to nieces and nephews.
“Jack-of-all-trades”, Richard could do it all. Serving in the armed forces, he started his skills as a mechanic. He served in Korea for 2 years, and received an honorable discharge in 1956. He started a 30-year career with Bethlehem Steel in Pottstown in 1949, retiring from the plant in Lehigh Valley in 1980. During a 161-day strike, Richard worked for David Brunner plastering and working on farm equipment, which catapulted him into his second 40-year career, after his retirement from Bethlehem Steel, working for Edward C. Peterson, turning old homes and barns into apartments, and retiring at 85 ½ in 2014. He COULD do anything, teaching his kids, or anyone who was interested, the “how to” and “why's” of mechanics. He was a mechanic, at heart, and not resigned to vehicles. He could fix washing machines, heaters, clocks, Anything!
In 1976, he and his family survived a house fire. Richard took time off to rebuild his home, serving as General Contractor, doing much of the construction himself with the help of many family and friends. He lived in this home until his death, and it is still the center of all family gatherings.
Richard was a life member of Grace Chapel, a devoted Christian with strong Christian beliefs. Richard also loved hunting, spending many years hunting in local fields for small game and going to Potter and Tioga counties for deer, spending time with family and dear friends.
