Alice F. (Freitas) St. Pedro, 99, wife of the late Jose Costa St. Pedro Jr., passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 13th, 2023, at The Landing of Collegeville, a senior living community.
Born and raised in Faial da Terra Sao Miguel, Azores Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Gaudino de Freitas and Alice (Macedo) Torres. Her mother was 49 years old when she was born. Her mother named her Alice, even though she had another daughter named Alice because her older daughter was now living in the United States with an uncle. Alice completed schooling through fourth grade, her life in the Azores was simple growing corn, wheat, potatoes, and beans.
Alice at the age of forty-two, along with her husband, Jose, and son, Joe, emigrated to the United States to live with her husband’s brother and sister- in- law. In California she worked on their farm. The three of them then one day decided to leave for New Bedford, Massachusetts. In New Bedford, she started working in a sewing factory which blossomed into her hobbies and talents.
Alice loved everything to do with sewing. She was skilled at knitting, embroidering, stitching, and crocheting. She was excellent at all of them despite having only vision in one eye. She lost her vision in her other eye at the age of three from Scarlett Fever. She knitted clothes for babies, and doolies for dining room tables. Alice passed down many Azorean food dishes from stewed octopus to Thanksgiving turkeys and stuffing to Portuguese cookies. She also enjoyed word search puzzles. Alice loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her family was everything to her. She loved being a part of all their lives, she loved to be active. She was never one to sit still.
Surviving is her son Joe St. Pedro, husband of Anita; grandchildren Jennifer Jaronski, wife of Tom, Richard Storms, husband of Tara, Alex St. Pedro and partner Lisa Karpowitz and Daniel St. Pedro, husband of Julia; great grandchildren Madison Jaronski, Bailey Jaronski, Hunter Jaronski, Ryan Wolbach, Taylor Wolbach, Nikko St. Pedro, and Brodie St. Pedro. She is predeceased by her eight siblings.
