Jean M. (McAfee) Carpenter, 86, of South Coventry, wife of the late Samual H. Carpenter, Sr., passed away Tuesday September 5, 2023 at her residence.

Born in East Nantmeal, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen (Ralston) McAfee.

Jean's loves included being on the sidelines and in the audiences of sporting events and activities for her children and grandchildren. She was an accomplished traveler, visiting 48 states with her beloved husband, though making memories at a little house on the water in Maryland was her favorite. She was a member of the Red Hat club and an avid sports fan who enjoyed watching NASCAR races, when she wasn't attending them, and carried a lifelong affinity for her favorite team, the Philadelphia Phillies.

Surviving are her children Samuel Carpenter, Jr. husband of Cathy, Jeffrey Carpenter husband of Cynthia King, Sharon Lott wife of Wesley, James Carpenter, and Dean Carpenter husband of Linda; grandchildren Samuel III, Taite, Jeffrey Jr., Tyler, Jenna, Julie, Kent, Gillian, Jessica, and Nicole; great grandchildren Peyton, Teagan, Tatum, Lillian, Morgan, and Lucas; brother William McAfee; and sister Edith Hartman.

Along with her husband and parents, Jean was predeceased by her sister Margaret Derecola and brothers Harold and Everett McAfee.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday September 9, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2101 Pottstown Pike, Pottstown, PA 19465. Burial will follow at Philadelphia Memorial Park, Frazer. Visitation will be held Saturday from 9:30-10:45 AM at the church.

I often expressed to Great Aunt Jean how deeply I appreciated the love, empathy and joy she especially provided my mother and her sister as children. To Aunt Jean…Children were not to just be seen and not heard. She provided a sorely needed source of kindness, truly “seeing” them, often encouraging them to join cousins and their Uncle in exuberant child’s play. A favorite photo of my mother and aunt as children and rare deviation from serious faces, they are outfitted with boxing gloves, playing with the boys- gleeful grins on their faces.
When my mother passed away, at 65- she counted among her most prized possessions a gift from Aunt Jean:
365 Bedtime Stories.
It’s pages and binding were well worn, tears carefully taped. She read first to her sister Carol Anne, and as children, I (and my brother!) eagerly requested them…the pages told daily stories of What A Jolly Street, the children who lived there, their pets (Velvet the kitten was a favorite!) and the kindnesses and lessons of the adults and neighbors in a gentle childhood. I realized at one point- it was a treasured gift because Aunt Jean herself was the epitome of these kindnesses and a strong, but gentle presence. Her love, wisdom and support was deeply needed, and freely given to my mother and her sister throughout their lives, and was extended to me after the loss of my mother.

Forever grateful - we are all better for her presence in our lives.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss.
Jean was more like a sister to me than an Aunt.
The memory of hearing her voice will bring me peace.
