Dennis L. Smith, 76, of Boyertown, husband of Donna M. (Cimino) Smith, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Reading Hospital. Dennis was born in 1948, also on June 1st.
Dennis was affectionately known as “Dad, PopPop, Denny, Den-Den, Smitty” as well as many other names by all who knew and loved him. Known for his huge heart and calm demeanor, he truly was a one of a kind.
Born in Pottstown, he was the son of the late Wayne and Ethel (Shankweiler) Smith.
Dennis proudly served in the United States Army. He served 2 years in the Vietnam War. Dennis worked at Boyertown Packaging Company for over 40 years and served as the Union President for 38 of those years.
Dennis was an avid sports enthusiast. He was a huge fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Dallas Cowboys. He loved golfing, bowling, fishing, basketball, and baseball. In his youth, he played for the Boyertown High School and Legion baseball teams. He was a very good pitcher and was even scouted at one point. Dennis also played on his church softball team throughout the years as the starting 3rd baseman.
Dennis shared his love of sports and fishing with everyone he knew but he especially enjoyed teaching his grandchildren. He also enjoyed throwing darts and “shooting baskets” at home.
Surviving along with his wife Donna, is his daughter Angela M. Miller, wife of Mark, Topton; son Ross Smith of Boyertown; daughter Alyson R. Mennig, wife of Zach, Oley; sister Marlene Harp, wife of the late Carl; brother Ronnie Smith, husband of the late Linda; grandchildren Drew Miller, Ben Miller, Elsa Mennig, Adelle Mennig, Isolde Mennig, and Magnus Mennig. He is predeceased by his brother Carl Smith; sister Nancy Filbert; and sister Rosalie Wade.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 11:00AM at New Hanover Lutheran Church (2941 Lutheran Rd, Gilbertsville, PA 19525) with Pastor Scott Staub officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown. A visitation will also be held on Friday, June 7, 2024, from 9:30AM-11:00AM at the church.
Dennis was not fond of formal attire. The family requests everyone to dress in their favorite sports apparel at Dennis’ service.
