Robert Richard Irwin, 77

Robert (Bob) Richard Irwin, 77, husband of Marianne (Foley) Irwin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late John F. Irwin and Elvera Mary (Riley) Irwin. He attended Ascension of our Lord grade school in Kensington and graduated from Northeast Catholic High School in 1965. Upon graduation, Bob proudly served in the US National Guard from 1966 to 1972.

Bob and Marianne grew up only two blocks away from each other but it was not until February of 1964 when they dated in high school and eventually married in May 1968. They bought a home on Sylvester Street in the Frankford section of Philadelphia and raised 4 children. Bob worked at SKF USA Inc. for what would be an amazing 44 years. In 1991, Bob followed his job and relocated his family to Lakewood, NY where he embraced many new friendships for the next 22 years. Bob and Marianne then returned to the greater Philadelphia area to be closer to family.

Sports were an integral part of Bob’s life. He was a coach, mentor, and board member at Moss A.A. in Wissinoming for over 20 years where he spent countless days and weekends shaping the future of many young children and forming lifelong bonds with other dedicated families. When he was not on the field coaching, you would find him avidly following all Philadelphia sports teams, especially the Eagles and the Phillies. Bob’s love and passion for sports continued on to his children and grandchildren; he enjoyed watching and supporting their interests both on and off the field.

While in NY, Bob was a member of the Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. In recent years, he spent his free time going back and forth between North Wildwood, NJ and Towamensing Trails in the Poconos. He was a longtime member of the Wildwood Elks and Knights of Columbus.

Surviving along with his wife, Marianne of 56 years, are his children Colleen Raum (Matthew), Robert R Irwin Jr. (Heather), Sean Irwin (Shannon), and Jennifer Velazquez (Marcelo); 8 grandchildren Kiley, Bridget, Jackson, Daniel, Connor, Caroline, Braylen and Aiden; brothers John F. Irwin Jr. (Diane); Joseph Irwin (Luba); and sisters Kathleen Burke (James); Ave Maria Maloney (Thomas); and many nieces and nephews, too numerous to name but still so loved. He is predeceased by his brother Thomas Irwin and his brother-in-law Arthur Foley.

A viewing will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 11:00AM-12:45PM at St. Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church (256 Swamp Pike, Schwenksville, PA 19473) with funeral mass to follow at 1:00PM. Internment Private.

In lieu of flowers, Bob’s request would be to offer your support to a local youth sports organization through either charitable donation or volunteer service.

Bob was one of my best High School pals at North Catholic and we both graduated in 1965. I went in the Army and to Vietnam and never saw him again until about 12 years ago at our Firefighters hall in Philadelphia. What a great surprise to see him again and his lovely wife Marianne. I had spent some time with his son Sean annd nephews the Foley brothers and never made the connection.
So sad to hear of his passing and I’ll always remember the good times we had so long ago. All around great guy as everyone can attest to.

It's been a long time since I have seen Bob or Mr. Irwin, but some people and the impressions they leave are timeless. Bob was a classmate and friend and although I was only a high school student at the time Mr. Irwin had a very simple way of making you feel important. No matter how brief the conversation was I remember walking away smiling the same way he always seemed to be when the chat began. The image I had when I read his name is the exact same smiling face in the picture attached. Those little things left a large mark and I'd like to thank him for being so good to all of us.
Our sincere condolences and may God bless Mr. Irwin and the Irwin family.

We spent a lot of time at my dad's house, and his neighbor, Bob, always made my children laugh. He was a big, friendly old fella with a quick smile and easy laugh. The Hudys will always remember his kindly nature. You will be missed, Bob.

I am so very sorry to hear about Bob’s passing. He was my dear friend and neighbor. He was more than just someone who lived next door; he was a true friend, a dedicated collaborator on any landscaping, construction, or home improvement project that came up. His willingness to lend a hand and share his knowledge made our neighborhood seem like a place where people truly cared for each other.

His presence brought warmth and camaraderie, turning ordinary tasks into moments of connection and friendship. He was the kind of neighbor who reminded us of the importance of community, always ready to help and always with a smile.

My heart breaks for his wonderful family and I too feel like I’ve lost a member of my own. I will deeply miss my good friend and neighbor. Our neighborhood won't be the same without him, but his memory will continue to inspire us to be there for one another, just as he always was.

Rest in peace, my friend. You will be greatly missed.

Jim and I worked with Bob at SKF in Philadelphia. In 1991 we were transferred to Jamestown NY along with other SKF employees and their families. We had the pleasure of meeting Marianne and her four beautiful children. It was an instant friendship. We had so many good times together whether it was hanging at the Rusty Nail and Bob singing his signature Karaoke song "Losing My Religion" to great parties at there house. Their friendship is invaluable. Our sincere condolences to Marianne and her family. May you find peace, love and happiness in the wonderful memories you all have made together. RIP Bob

Marianne & Children,
I can not express how so very sorry I was when I heard about Bob. I have fond memories of him, those Moss days, and the Irwin family. Bob was a good man, friend, and coach. Myself, all three of my sons, and their dad liked and respected him so much. I personally will not forget how he helped me find the perfect part-time job at SKF. It was the beginning of my administrative career in the corporate world for which I was so grateful.
Marianne, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. RIP Bob.

Our hearts go out to the entire family. Met Bob and Marianne at the wedding of Jenn and Marcelo. Both welcomed the entire family from MO with open arms. It was as if we all knew each other our entire lives.

Unfortunately the distance didn’t allow many gatherings. But when they occurred, Bob always made sure we had a fantastic time. Will always cherish those memories.

Keep the good memories close to the heart as will help thru the dark hours. He wants you to keep those beautiful smiles and laughs going.

Hugs and prayers to all of you.
