Richard Stephenson, 83

Richard Stephenson, a beloved husband, father, brother, professor, author, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, in Pottstown, PA, at the age of 83.

Born in Billings, MT, and raised in Miles City, Mt, Richard's life was a tapestry woven with intellectual curiosity, artistic passion, and unwavering compassion. His academic journey, from a degree in English at the University of Montana to a PhD in Comparative Literature at Stony Brook University, and further studies in France, fueled a lifelong passion for writing. During his life he authored over a dozen novels, exploring diverse genres from academic non-fiction to thrillers.

Beyond academia, Richard's vibrant personality and diverse interests enriched the lives of those around him. His home was always filled with the warmth of beloved cats and dogs, reflecting his deep affection for animals. A lifelong learner, he embraced languages, mastering French, German and Italian. An avid supporter of charities like Doctors Without Borders and Heifer.org, his generosity knew no bounds.

Richard's playful spirit extended to sports and the arts. A former high school football player, he loved to play tennis and was a loyal fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. A lover of art, he appreciated and collected works from family and friends, even dabbling in painting himself. His love for music found expression through his piano playing, filling his home with beautiful melodies. And as a black belt in tae kwon do, he embodied discipline and resilience.

Richard is survived by his wife of 44 years, Wilhelmina (Willa) Stephenson, his son, David Stephenson, two grandchildren, Sophia Stephenson and Annabel Stephenson, and his brother, James Stephenson. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched, his broad smile, his interest in everyone he met, his boundless energy and unwavering kindness will be forever remembered by those who’s lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders or Heifer.org, charities close to Richard's heart.

Add My Condolences

“We do not believe in ourselves until someone reveals that deep inside us something is valuable, worth listening to, worthy of our trust, sacred to our touch. Once we believe in ourselves we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight or any experience that reveals the human spirit.”

“Doc” Stephenson was one of the greatest teacher/coaches I ever had.

It was his coaching that allowed me the athletic freedom that allowed me to flourish, be noticed, and compete.

This led to me continuing my eduction and athletic pursuits at the collegiate level which manifested itself into making me the husband, father and man I am today.

Thank you sir,

Rest well coach ! Go Raiders !
