Edith “Edie” Shaninger, 86

Edith “Edie” (Mayberry) Shaninger, 86, wife of the late Pernin Shaninger, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Chestnut Knoll in Boyertown.

Born in Pottstown, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Elizabeth (Templin) Mayberry. She graduated from Pottstown Sr High with the class of 1956. Edie went on to make roots in Pottstown, working in Payroll at PMMC, where she dedicated nearly 33 years of service and later became a member of the PMMC Retirees Association. It is also where she started a family of her own, raising her three children; Barbara, Carol, and Ronald. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

To know Edie was to know that she was an avid golfer. Much of her time was spent perfecting her golf skills and engaging in friendly competition with her late husband, Pernin, at Twin Ponds Golf Club, in which they were both proud members. Specifically, Edie demonstrated her golf talents in the Twin Ponds Ladies Golf League and the Gilbertsville Golf League.

Many of Edie’s weekends were spent socializing at the Elks Club in Pottstown. She was a member of the Doe Club and would often share many fond memories of times spent with friends while enjoying the atmosphere of the club. Edie enjoyed seeing what beauties our country had to offer through traveling all over the United States. Her summers were spent by the pool with her family, soaking up the sunshine and making memories. Family was most important to Edie and she was a very proud grandmother and great grandmother. She could be found cheering in the crowd at a sporting event, engaging in school functions, or simply singing happy birthday in loving support of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Edie had a zest for life, a strong will, and had a voice that could never be squandered! Whether it be a bouquet of sunflowers, a cardinal sitting on a branch, the chant from a Penn State Football Game, or the ring of a telephone, there will be many reminders of Edie, and her legacy, surrounding us in our daily lives.

Surviving is her daughter Barbara Gehman, wife of Thomas; step-daughter Lynette Klinger, wife of Mark and step-son Randy Shaninger; grandchildren Brooke Schwoyer, wife of Greg, Amber Puc, Heather Smale, wife of John, Taylor Moyer, Kendal Moyer, Jordan Moyer, Ronald “Bud” Bailey, and numerous step grandchildren; great grandchildren Emily Schwoyer, Isabella Schwoyer, Logan Townsend, and Hailey Smale. She is predeceased by her daughter Carol Ann Moyer wife of Tim, son Ronald Lee Bailey, and brothers Harold Mayberry, Clarence Mayberry, and Kenneth Mayberry.

Services will be held privately by the family at this time. In lieu of flowers, Edie wanted donations to be made to St. Jude in her honor.
