Dr. Lewis “Buzz” C. Cuthbert, 79

Dr. Lewis "Buzz" C. Cuthbert, 79, of North Coventry, passed away on June 4, 2025, at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, NJ. He was devoted to his family and community, leaving behind a legacy of love, education, and advocacy.

Born to the late Lorraine and Dorothy (Kratz) Cuthbert, Buzz grew up in the Lansdale area. He earned his undergraduate degree from Ursinus College and a doctorate from Temple University. Throughout his distinguished career in education, he served as an English teacher, vice principal, superintendent, and professor, inspiring countless students and colleagues. Alongside his late wife Donna, he co-founded The Alliance for a Clean Environment (ACE), where he served as president, and he co-authored the book "Unlikely Environmentalist" with his niece Kelly Cuthbert Jameson.

Buzz's passions extended beyond education and environmentalism to soccer, which he played and coached throughout his life, including at Owen J. Roberts. His family affectionately called him Papadoc, and he cherished his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Surviving Buzz are his daughters, Amber Buchanan (wife of Mark Harvey) and Heather Helmers (wife of Duff); grandchildren, Justin Hepler (husband of Melanie), Kiersten Hepler (wife of Jafar Hussain), Taylor Hamilton (wife of Dylan), and Sara Malloy (wife of Jimmy); great-grandchildren, Kai, Leo, Hazel, Max, Ari, Quinn, Blake, and Ivy; and brother, Robert "Corky" Cuthbert. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Cuthbert.

Buzz will be remembered for his kindness, humor, patience, and selflessness.

I was fortunate to get to know two versions of Buzz. One was the professional. Our non profit groups collaborated on numerous efforts, including public testimony, press conferences, and various meetings. Buzz served as a Board member of the group I direct, the Radiation and Public Health Project. And his environmental work only took place after a distinguished career as an educator.

The second version of Buzz I got to know well was the personal side. Susan and I spent a lot of social time with him and Donna. Buzz was a wonderful human... kind, gracious, upbeat, modest, and many more things. Always a great guy to be around. As much as he is missed, I and everyone he touched should feel grateful and blessed to have known him for so long. We live in a better world thanks to him.

It's taken time for me to absorb the passing of my dear friend Buzz. We were together but weeks ago. I'm so grateful for that gift. Buzz was a gentle man, who stood for truth and who loved his family dearly. He and Donna were like family to me and I'm so grateful to have had them both in my life. I turned to him in times of crisis and times of joy. He understood me and comforted me always. His work was with children and health, which he took seriously, will forever leave a mark on many. He and Donna never stopped their fight for right. Even though I cannot be with him now, I am comforted by his presence that surrounds us. It's natural for loss to not make sense. He was a good man, loved by family and by those whose lives he touched. Thank you Buzz.

With the loss of Buzz, Pottstown loses the last of the most dynamic duo of activists ever to fight for the health and safety of area residents. Buzz and Donna’s success in closing an ever-expanding landfill and halting the construction of an expensive, ineffective trash to steam plant in Pottstown were massive achievements! The importance of these accomplishments cannot be overstated. We thank them every day for their dedication and selfless work on behalf of an entire community. We were fortunate to call them both our friends. Their legacy lives on!

I was truly saddened to hear about the passing of my uncle. While I didn’t have the opportunity to know him personally, I’ve always heard how deeply he loved his family and how many lives he touched through his warmth and generosity. It’s clear he made a lasting impact on those around him. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved him dearly. May his memory bring comfort and continue to shine through the lives he touched.
