Charles Renninger Hoffman, 97, husband of Betty Elaine (Bower) Hoffman, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2026, at his home in Barto surrounded by his family.
Born on the family farm in Washington Township, he was the son of the late Chester and Ella Mae (Renninger) Hoffman.
Charles was a lifelong dairy farmer and was the fourth generation of his family to run the farm in Barto. He was very proud that the seventh generation helps to carry on the family farming legacy. Charles was the owner of Hoffman’s Dairy Store, raised and milked dairy cows, and grew various crops. He later developed part of the farm into Hoffman Estates. Charles was a hardworking man of faith. He was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, Niantic, and was a previous church council member. He was also a member of the Bally Lion’s Club, served as a Washington Township supervisor, and was on the board of the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed collecting antiques and took his Model T to various car shows. Charles loved spending time at his trailer in Sullivan County, went on several family hunting trips out west, and found joy in gardening and spending time working around his pond. He was an amateur winemaker who was always giving away his latest bottles. Charles was a generous and empathetic man who provided comfort and care to others; he and his brother Wilson went on a mission trip to Mexico where they built small homes for those needing shelter. He often visited sick friends and enjoyed bringing them chicken corn noodle soup and rice pudding that he and Betty made together. His energy, grit, and determination will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving along with his wife, Betty, are his children Richard Hoffman, husband of Dorly; Barry Hoffman, husband of Donna; Bruce Hoffman, husband of Karen; stepchildren Brenda Bisbort, wife of George; Diana Gehman; Daniel Brown, husband of Kelli; Ronald Elliott; and Dawn Hoffman, wife of Dave; grandchildren Duane Hoffman, husband of Karla; Douglas Hoffman, Audrey Latshaw, wife of Cale; Matthew Hoffman, husband of Mary; Scott Hoffman, husband of Victoria, and Jenna Eisenhart, wife of Keith; 14 step grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and 22 step great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife Lillian (Kleinsmith) Hoffman; sister Edith Erb; and brothers Ralph, Earl, Wilson and Roy Hoffman.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church Niantic (222 Niantic Rd, Barto, PA 19504) with Rev. Eugene Zaiser officiating. Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Niantic Cemetery. A viewing will also be held on Friday, September 4, 2026 from 9:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church Niantic or to the Salvation Army- Lessig Booth Family Residence (137 King St, Pottstown, PA 19464) in Charles’ name.
